Deer Defeat “It Can’t Be Beat” is doing a show in the state of Virginia on February 9 to 12, 2012. This is the first introduction of our all natural deer, rabbit and woodchuck repellent to the people of Virginia.

After what we went through in the Northeast during the winter of 2011, I did not think we would ever have another nice winter. Surprisingly this winter so far it’s very mild. Shhhhh…..cold but great…no serious snow… until today. Maybe it’s not the ideal winter for snow lovers… I like snow … just for a few days and then I like to see some green grass… and sun… sun … sun. This is the time of year when deer are hungry and looking for anything green they can find. If you had followed the instructions for winter use of Deer Defeat you have already sprayed your evergreens in late November. Second application should be applied soon, by the end of January. However, each region is different and it depends on the environment the deer are exposed to, how much food the deer is able to find in your area and the amount of snow on the ground. 

As always, use common sense. If you see deer coming closer to your evergreens, re-apply Deer Defeat repellent. Extra coating of repellent will not hurt your plants, in contrast, not only will it protect your plants of being destroyed by deer but the repellent will coat the leaves and protect them from the extreme cold and gusty winds which could be brutal for the plants in the winter.  Caution is recommended if you are spraying Rhododendrons especially during the extremely cold weather. If possible, refrain from spraying Rhododendrons when their leaves are curdled up and thin as a pencil. If Deer Defeat repellent was applied in November as suggested, they might not need to be sprayed again for the duration of the winter. Only spray if you see that the deer are attacking them, but if you can wait it’s always better to apply the spray on sunny and warmer days when their leaves are slightly open.

This winter I was in Florida for the holidays with the family and I heard a flock of birds chirping early in the morning and when I looked outside, to my surprise, I saw Robins everywhere…. I could not resist but to take million pictures of them because that is what I do every spring up north. I have finally found out where they migrate after they leave us when the cold starts to set in. WOW…. it was such a sight to see and hear their happy song. Seeing them, it gave me a different meaning to our long winters and my anxious anticipation of their return in the early spring.  Just to think how I waited impatiently their return every spring and here they are in the middle of the winter…. I just stood there in the middle of the yard absorbing that beautiful sunny morning and listening to their happy chirping …what a sight and sound…just a wonderful feeling of life all around me…I am sharing some pictures with you of Robins under the orange tree, they were so …beautiful and so … happy. I will miss them up North but they will be back to let us know its spring all over again!!! Leave it to Mother Nature.        

Since we are talking about nature, just a reminder, if you love deer and wildlife and are feeding the deer during the winter, please stop, you are not helping them. Trust nature, they will find their own food, survive the winter and reach the maturity on their own.

Eight years ago when Boris wanted to purchase this plain row house, he asked his wife, who by the way did not like the house in its original stage to give him a year and if she still  does not like the house in a year from the day they purchased it, they can look for another house. So she agreed and Boris got to work… and a year later she loved what she saw. The house started its transformation under Boris’s imagination and his skilled hands. I don’t think he knew he possessed this kind of talent, some of us live our whole life without discovering what our true talent is, I believe he found his. You be the judge…pictures are beautiful…. but being there walking the garden is another experience. …just unbelievable… and each time you take a walk you discover something tucked away and hidden you have not seen or noticed earlier… As he transformed the back yard he also changed the front of the house as I will show you with the following pictures.  When you enter the house no details were spared inside, which is just as beautiful as outside. The back is an extension of the front of the house ….absolutely magnificent …a very rich looking English gardens…..on a  much smaller scale…..he succeeded to create a true sanctuary.

I am so proud of Boris, a great landscape artist. I tried to think who in our family had such a talent and the only person I could think of would be our grandfather Zanmaria. He loved his plants and flowers and had impeccable small gardens all around his country home. He had a big influence on all his grandchildren’s lives as we were growing up in Croatia. He showed us the importance of hard work and love for our family even thought so many years later most of us are scattered all around the world.

So…. as an American cousin would say to the English cousin “Boris, you bloody impressed me!” Thank you so much for allowing me to share your beautiful creation with our Deer Defeat customers!!!!

Here we are again at the doors of the colder season.  Unfortunately, this late summer the Northeast was severely hit by hurricane Irene.  All that were affected by this hurricane will remember it for a long time to come.

Upstate New York got plenty of rain with some heavier winds.  For some of us it was merely an inconvenience, but for many people the extremely heavy rains brought great distress. After the ground became totally saturated, the basements began to flood. Widespread power outages greatly complicated matters. In some areas the houses were under water and the ones closer to the rivers were washed away with the force of the rushing waters.  Some surrounding counties were severely hit to the point where people had to be evacuated because their villages were totally under water.  Vermont lost a few historic covered bridges, people that lived close to the Hudson River reported seeing boats, capsized, floating down the muddy river along with pieces of the structures of the bridges. Many cars were buried under the water or under the fallen trees caused by heavy winds. In all this, unfortunately, lives were lost.

This is not normal for the Northeast. We do not usually experience this kind of weather, but this year we are receiving a little sampling of everything.  Prior to the floods a mini earthquake struck us. Nothing major for upstate, but New York City recorded tremors worth mention, with the evacuation of buildings.

We will see what this winter will bring. We hope the people affected by the flood return back to normal or somewhat normal before the winter. Our thoughts and best wishes are with them.

Late August and September are the months of harvest. There are plenty of farmer’s markets with fresh vegetables and all kinds of delicious fruit.  I love stopping at the neighborhood road stands and support local growers.

September is the month of continuing blooms as long as the weather is nice and warm.  If you live in the colder area please protect your flowers for the first or even second frost.  You can prolong the life of the blooms for a few more weeks. This is the season for colorful Asters and Mums. For total protection make sure you continue spraying with Deer Defeat all natural deer and rabbit repellent.

August is a beautiful month when we can just relax and enjoy the nice warm weather. We are sure if you have used Deer Defeat you have the most beautiful flowers in your neighborhood. We hope you get lazy with a gorgeous view of your flowers or vegetable garden and read a nice book in the shade of a big tree, sip cold lemonade or go on a well deserved vacation. Swim, play, ride a bike, anything that makes you happy. For us in the Northeast the summer is too short, so enjoy the rest of the summer.

A lot has happened to Deer Defeat LLC since this spring that we can be proud of.

Deer Defeat, all natural deer and rabbit repellent has participated in the Gardening Club Product Testing Program.  Starting in January, 2011 all the way through the end of February Deer Defeat  sent 350 bottles of 32 oz RTU all over the United States to the gardeners/ testers of National Home Gardening Club.  These were tested in all kinds of temperatures and conditions. Completed tester’s reviews began to come back to the editor of Gardening How –To magazine as early as March of 2011. The very first time Deer Defeat was introduced to all the members and subscribers of Gardening How-To magazine was in the May/June 2011 edition.

The final testing was concluded the last day of July 31st, 2011.       

Besides being tested on the performance of the repellent, it was also rated on other issues, thus influencing the overall rating. We are proud to report that as of August 1^st, we have received a very high approval rating and were awarded the “members tested and recommended” seal of approval by National Home Gardening Club.  The seal has been added to our home page and it will appear on our labels, brochures and advertisements. We thank all the members of National Home Gardening Club that took the time to test Deer Defeat “It Can’t Be Beat” all natural deer and rabbit repellent.

You will soon be able to read all the comments written by the National Home Garden Club testers which will be posted on our web site. Because of the large quantity of tester’s responses it will take some time to post all of their written reviews.

Deer Defeat name was approved on July of 2011 by the registered trademark agency and we are now able to use the registered trademark on our labels, brochures and advertisements.

Events for Deer Defeat repellent during the month of August:

Deer Defeat LLC participated in Mass Marketplace Festival on August 6th at the beautiful Gardens at Elm Bank in Wellesley, MA.  Proceeds from the Massachusetts Marketplace Festival benefit the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, a member-supported organization dedicated to encouraging and improving the science and practice of horticulture and developing the public’s enjoyment, appreciation and understanding of plants and the environment.

Deer Defeat repellent brochures and poster was displayed by Master Gardeners during the Ulster County Fair who trust and use Deer Defeat repellent on their jobs. They recommend the use of Deer Defeat for a total protection from deer, rabbit and woodchuck destruction and for carefree maintenance of flowers and gardens.

Deer Defeat products were on display in the 9^th Annual Gardening Fair at the Fairfield County Extension Center, introduced by the Master Gardeners of  Connecticut. We greatly appreciate their support.

I took a walk down our road this morning and just enjoyed the nature. There is nothing more beautiful than a nice crispy fresh sunny morning with the birds happily singing. I even surprised a deer that was grazing by the road and it was just standing there looking at me. I wonder if it recognized me from the past winter.  I came within 10 feet of the deer that was standing perfectly calm before it ran away. There were squirrels and chipmunks zigzagging in front of my feet. My neighbor’s dog greeted me with his bark.  By some people, all these creatures are considered pests, but what would an early morning walk be without the sounds of daybreak and these beautiful animals?

This is the time of the year when we all should be enjoying our beautiful flowers. I just got back from another business trip from down south and I was surprised to see the mums in bloom and tiger lilies taller than I. The homeowner has been using Deer Defeat repellent as does her neighbor who has masses of roses in full bloom all around the house.  

Hope you too are using Deer Defeat and experience the same results. Once you learn how easy it is to use Deer Defeat repellent you will forget how difficult it used to be to grow anything in your garden. Deer Defeat will keep those pesky creatures away from your beautiful flowers. You never need to rotate the Deer Defeat repellent with another repellent. Please make sure you spray your hosta and your daylilies. With daylilies you only get one day to enjoy those beauties, therefore, protect those buds with Deer Defeat repellent as they grow.  Keep an eye on your impatiens, phlox, roses, hydrangeas, sunflowers and all those beautiful juicy flowers that are just forming or are in full bloom.  If you can’t remember when you last sprayed, it’s time.

Your Rhododendrons should have finished blooming. They can use some vitamins at this time and if you take the old growth off, by snapping off the stems of the spent blooms, it will encourage new blossoms the following year.  If you wait too long it will make it harder to clean them up.       

All flowering plants can benefit by pinching off the old flowers. This will encourage the repeat blooms during the summer.

I absolutely love seeing deer in the early morning every day by the watering hole. I also love to see rabbits playing   and chasing each other and running around the lawn. I love seeing little chipmunks drinking from the cascading water fall at the fish pond, but I also love to enjoy my untouched flowers.  I learned a few years ago that I can have it all with the simple use of Deer Defeat Repellent.
