Orchard Update: Pumpkins and Cherries
August 22, 2010 by Nevia.
Pumpkins:
Pumpkins were sowed again. The farmer believed the original seeds were old.
On 7/15 the pumpkin plants had only 2 to 4 leaves each. He planted 2 rows, each 1,000 ft long.
On 7/26 pumpkin plants were 6 to 10 inches high. Personally, I did not believe anything could grow this fast. On this day it was very hot, about 95 degrees, and we sprayed the pumpkins mid day at about 12.30PM. You can see from the pictures that the pumpkins were growing on the black plastic which makes it even hotter. It was a good test to see the performance of the repellent on a hot day. As we suspected, the repellent acted as a fertilizer and enhanced the growth of the vines as it does on the flowers and evergreens in the wintertime.
On 8/4 the pumpkin plants were 2 ft high and showed signs of fruit and runners. At this point they were sprayed on the outside only of both rows.
Will be checking on them soon and will continue our report.

Cherry Trees:
Cherry trees protected by Deer Defeat Repellent were doing great and were growing high and expanding. Some are almost too big to be protected at this point. We will continue to protect the smaller trees. These cherry trees were treated with different methods. We had some deer damage when the protection had worn out, but it was minor. We have since corrected the method and there were no new signs of deer damage. In the same rows there were shrubs of wild mulberries and we could see deer damage all over these shrubberies. Some unsprayed mature cherry trees were eaten by deer but they did not bother the treated cherry trees. That was a very positive sign. There was definitely plenty of deer presence in the orchard and the damage they did on non sprayed wild shrubbery was the proof. The smaller cherry trees will continue to be protected until they reach a height where it will not make a difference if deer eat a few leaves. I personally think the drought is as much of a threat to these young trees, at this point, as deer are.

Ulster County Fair
August 19, 2010 by Nevia.
Ok, we are done with the Ulster County Fair. Our first experience was not that bad since we did not know what to expect. We met many wonderful people. We have made great connections. All in all it was a good week.
Something I was not prepared for was all the dust we were inhaling on a daily basis. We were in a big tent and because it was hot the sides were raised up every morning. You could actually see the clean spots where the bottles used to be the day before. The dust was all over the tablecloths, on the bottles and on everything that was not in a sealed box. All the bottles, along with the rest of the display, had to be cleaned down on a daily basis. That kept us very busy each morning.
I would like to thank all the people who took the time to give us wonderful testimonials. They are now posted on our Web site. I would also like to thank a lady who told me she heard about our product in a garden class. She made my day when she told me that all the master gardeners are raving about Deer Defeat Repellent. During the calmer hours I visited the horticultural building. There I met a gardener who recognized my company’s name written on my t-shirt. She told me she was on her 3rd bottle of our concentrate and she absolutely loved our Deer Defeat Repellent. She uses it on all her jobs.
Connections like these and statements from people that use Deer Defeat Repellent are priceless to me. Thank you all for a wonderful week and we will keep expanding and delivering Deer Defeat to the stores near you. If we are not yet in the store in your neighborhood, please send us an e-mail with the name of your favorite store or greenhouse.
We were in the Hyde Park Farmers Market on August 14. I love the people that come to that Farmers Market. I have done some other farmers markets but was surprised by the great hospitality of the vendors and very friendly customers. It was a pleasure being a part of that market and I am looking forward to being there again this coming Saturday on August 21st. See you there.
Our next big venture is Dutchess County Fair on August 24th. We are very excited to be part of this great event. We will be in building “B”, stop by, ask questions, give us your opinion and if you are currently using Deer Defeat Repellent, we hope you will take a few minutes to give us your testimonial.
As always, thank you for reading.

Happy Mid-Summer
August 13, 2010 by Nevia.
It’s hard to believe we are in the middle of August. This is when we start enjoying the fruit of our labor. Beautiful flowers, a great variety of vegetables and delicious fruit, all in great abundance. Well, what is there not to love about the summer? I could only think of one thing about this summer; it has been extremely hot and dry. I have been pulling the water hose every single day to water my gardens, to a point that I feel like a fireman. Not an easy job, thank God the water is still running and the well is not drying out yet…We don’t realize how much we depend on water and a good rain to help us out with all the plants.
We are continuing with the commercial orchard test. We have been visiting the orchard on a weekly basis.
Tomato plants:
On July 8 the tomato plants were coming back after these were originally damaged by the deer before they were sprayed. The plants were only 3 or 4 inches tall. The farmer was very courageous; he planted a row of tomato plants 1,000 ft long. It looks beautiful, almost endless.
On 7/15 the tomato plants were about 6 to 8 inches high.
On 7/26 the vines were about a foot high. We could see deer tracks parallel to the row but at about a 5 ft distance. The tomato plants had remained untouched.
These were sprayed each time with Deer Defeat Repellent as the plants had grown extensively in this period.
On 8/4 all tomato plants were in full bloom and some had green tomatoes already. At this point we sprayed the grass along the perimeter only, two feet wide all along the row. Will check the plants in a week or so and continue the report until the harvest.
